Relocation Depression is a Real Thing

By Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group

Genuine discussion here. Moving to Tulsa to a new home is demanding given the greatest circumstances. You're departing your home--where you've made a life for yourself and your loved ones--and beginning once again in a unfamiliar location. Indeed, the move alone is exciting--an adrenaline rush that goes on for months while you discover a new home, load up the old one, and become settled with your family into their new routines.

Yet soon after the cartons are unpacked and you've figured out the perfect path to the dry cleaners, the new reality sets in--you are in a new location, and your buddies and social life are back in your old place--the location you still dream of as "home". And everything seems off kilter--there is a sense of being out of place, and you're uncertain whether it's a physical or subconscious place, but it's just not right. It is not home.

These kind of symptoms may be more than the post-move doldrums. It's possible that you may have something called "relocation depression". Relocation depression is actually a thing--the onset is after all the commotion of the move simmers down--and should be considered seriously and diagnosed in the event that you are unable to get rid of it on your own.

Signs to Look out for

These are generally a few of the symptoms to look for, the occurrence of several of these over a couple of week period indicates you need to acquire some professional help.

You Simply Can't Get Out of Bed

When you do, you may be fatigued and really don't have the strength to get through your day. Sleeplessness can be another symptom of depression; you may be drained constantly, nevertheless you are unable to go to sleep. Or you can sleep--twelve hours at a stretch and you will be still lethargic.

Absence of Interest in Anything

In your old house or city, you had your schedule and your stuff--work, pals, pastimes--that filled your months. Currently, you have got work, but your buddies did not accompany you and it's tough to be passionate about your interests if, like a third-grader, you don't have anyone to play with. Grownups needs good friends too, so don't feel bad or guilty that you're a bit lonely.

In the event you just can't get focused on anything--pastimes, your job, finding new pals, interacting with family--chances are it's a symptom of depression. Together with the blahs comes not being able to focus--if something may catch your interest, it wouldn't keep going but a few minutes and you would zone out.

Reluctance to Leave the Residence

The new home is your safe haven, and you simply don't want to depart from it. Besides, you have TV shows for binging, and your social network to check. Social media is often a double-edged sword as it lets you stay up with friends, but it can also facilitate and abet in your remaining in rather than finding new friends.

Tips on How to Overcome Relocation Depression

There are some things you can do to remove the fog, so test these and pay attention to if you feel better.

Get Some Exercise--Active folks feel better, so get out and just stroll several times every day. If you have a dog this is a built-in reason to get outside. Expand that outside time each day.

Reduce or Get rid of Alcohol--This is a depressant, so it will be best to stay away from it until you're feeling better.

Connect with People--Take a program or join a newcomers group. Volunteer--extra hands and skills are usually welcome. Just a few new associates produces a significant difference.

Try out Something New--Go to museums, cafes, cinema, restaurants--explore your new community and get to know it. Staying busy is like exercise--it keeps the excitement moving along and you'll have much more energy.

In the event that these home cures really don't help, look for a counselor. Relocation depression is no joke, and not dealt with, may spiral into something worse. You understand yourself better than anyone, and in case things are not quite right, pay attention to your body and mind. Moving to Tulsa is one of life's most nerve-racking occasions, nevertheless it does not have to become a reason for sadness or depression.

Very pleased with the overall respect and care the men gave to my possessions. Even mailing me very quickly the only thing lost in transit. Would recommend to anyone needing a long distant move.
